Franciscan Ministry at Saint Bonaventure

Adoration at Saint Bonaventure began October 2, 1997, two days before the Feast of St. Francis. Pastor Fr. Bernard Zadjel expressed a desire to have adoration one day a week following morning Mass, and 38 people signed up for a holy hour every Thursday. After three years of Eucharistic Thursdays, the Parish Council made it a goal to start perpetual adoration for the year 2000, designated a Jubilee Year and the "Year of the Eucharist" by Pope John Paul II. The beginning of perpetual adoration was historic for Saint Bonaventure and the surrounding community, as this was the only perpetual adoration chapel in the area.

It was the effort of many that made perpetual adoration at Saint Bonaventure a reality. A prayer group organized meeting weekly to ask God's help and blessings on this effort. The entire parish community was invited to participate and to pray the Memorare daily. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of many parishioners. Contributions covered all of our costs, and many donated their time to make our Lord's new home a lovely dwelling.

Our chapel was named "Our Lady of the Angels" by Fr. Bernie after the Portiuncula chapel that St. Francis restored after hearing Christ's call to rebuild his church. Angelo Gheradi was the liturgical artist responsible for the interior design of the chapel. Mr. Gheradi designed the two angels in our chapel, carved by the Demetz Art Studio in Northern Italy. One of our adorers designed the tabernacle, and the monstrance was brought back from Fatima, Portugal.

More than 400 individuals committed themselves to a holy hour each week, some from neighboring parishes. On the Feast of Christ the King, November 26, 2000, Bishop Paul Dudley presided at the 11 a.m. Mass.  After Mass, there was a procession into the "Our Lady of the Angels" chapel. Perpetual adoration has continued at Saint Bonaventure for the last 20 years, thanks to the prayers and dedication of countless adorers and dozens of coordinators. The chapel's overall coordinators were Pat Gilligan 2000-2018, Lisa Bauch 2018-2020, and Will Herrmann beginning March 2020.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily prevented the parish from holding perpetual adoration in the chapel, we continue to hold adoration in the sanctuary for as many hours as possible. We hope that you will prayerfully consider joining us.
