Notes to the Friars
Saint Bonaventure Catholic Community was founded on the principles of St. Francis: love and service to God and neighbor. Today our community is vibrant and diverse because of our firm foundation of working together in love and service! We are grateful for the Conventual Franciscan Friars who have been a part of our community, providing leadership, service, and ministry over the years. Help us celebrate and honor our Friars and history by sharing a memory or sending a note to our Friars with the form below.
Thank You
This is a very sad day seeing this happened. I grew up across the street and have many memories of the cycle having the church built and how the area had service before it was built. As you might know told stay away while it was being built.. How many kids listen totally. Yes spent time walking around watching it being built. Second floor where choir is one of my favorite spots. My grandfather once said Franciscians are the best group they understand being less fortunate and they always have time for their members . Now I understand his statement. I feel this was not a good decision but I hope I am wrong. I never thought would be back to my first church. I wish everyone of you the best on your new road. Thank you for all each one of you have done and please continue having us in your prayers.

Appreciated Franciscan Ministry
I've been a member of Saint Bonaventure since 2009. I so appreciated the Franciscan ministry; their spiritually and excellent, life giving homilies. They can't be replaced. I am so sorry that they are leaving us.

Franciscans Provided Light of Christ
The Franciscans have provided a consistent light of Christ to discern and serve. Fr Richard quiet connection to the parish helped underscore the same and helped us overcome some of our more strident tendencies to judge or cast out . Thank You Fr Richard for your guidance and prayers, especially ahead of our pilgrimage of St James - a form of penance and ample time focused discernment. Fr Bernie - Thank you for the Sacrament of Baptism- a truly special event that still anchors my life. The whole family will miss your consistent centering and encouragement.
God Bless!

Honor to Work With Franciscans
Growing up in a small southern Minnesota town, knowing only diocesan priests, I would never have dreamt I would have the honor to work for Franciscans for 25 years. First at Sacred Heart in St Paul followed by Saint Bonaventure in Bloomington. It is a memory I will treasure forever. The Friars I have met and worked with have imprinted on my soul the teachings, charity and generosity of their life living out the teachings of St Francis.
Thank you; God bless you; and may you continue to impact the people you meet!

When We Count Our Blessings, We Count You Twice!
It's difficult to know where to begin to thank you Franciscan Friars for your dedicated spiritual leadership as our "Good Shepherds"' at the Church of Saint Bonaventure in Bloomington, Minnesota, for more than 60 years. Since joining the parish shortly after our marriage in l972, Jack and I have found Saint Bonaventure Catholic Community to be our nurturing spiritual home for prayer, worship, reception of the sacraments and growth in our love and relationship with God. All three of our children, Chad, Heidi and Jennifer, have been blessed to have received the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation and Marriage through the spiritually supportive guidance of various Friars who have served in our parish. We are now delighted to see the next generation of our grandchildren, experiencing the same nurturing environment of the Franciscan Friars at our Saint Bonaventure Parish. We will be forever grateful for you Friars, especially Father Richard Kaley and Father Ed Goldbach, for being not only our spiritual "shepherds," but also an important part of our family's life events. Although the Franciscan Friars Community will be greatly missed, the legacy of St. Francis that you've instilled in parishioners will live on. When we count our blessings, we count you twice! May the blessings you've extended to others come back abundantly to enrich your lives with peace, love and joy in the future--from here to eternity!
Sincerely in appreciation,
Donna & Jack Dahl and Family

Franciscan Presence Appreciated
We moved to Bloomington and joined St Bonaventure’s Parish in 1972, so nearly 50 years. We have always appreciated the Franciscan presence . I worked for almost 30 years at St Edward’s in Bloomington, but St Boni’s was always our worshipping community. Our girls attended CCD and received sacraments here. I have a special place for Fr Howard, Fr Terry, Fr Ron and Fr Richard, such good homilists, along with all the good Friars. It is sad to see them leave our community but hopefully we will still feel their presence.

God Bless Our Friars
The Franciscan Friars serving St Bonaventure's helped make this parish an especially blessed Catholic community. We will miss you all so much. God bless our friars. My prayers remain with you all. Keep us in your prayers also. May the future of each of you succeed in continuing the work of Jesus in the world.

Greetings Brother Friars ... it has been an honor and blessing for the past nine years for Judy and me to be a part of the Saint Bonaventure Catholic Community under the pastoral leadership of the Franciscans and particular Fr Richard Kaley. We both were blessed by his leadership and pastoral care of our community and staff. He led us in a way that we are confident Jesus would have approved saying "well done good and faithful servant. Enter into my joy." For me as a deacon Fr Richard was a wonderful mentor and example on how to serve our community. We wish him the best going forward. We also want to honor other friars who lived and served us at St Boni's: Fr Ed Goldbach who helped out whenever needed and was always game to party with any parishioners who invited him to come out. Fr Camillus Gott who became a dear friend, counselor and confessor. God bless my military buddy. Fr Matthew Malek who brought much life to any and all masses that he presided at. His voice is loud but his heart is soft and genuine. Thank you one and all which includes all the other friars visited and presided when needed. We truly love "yawl". This last statement is in honor and thankfulness for Friar Bryan, and I still can't spell or correctly pronounce his last name. May God lead you all forth to wherever he calls you. Take care and God bless.

Inspirational Friars
Getting to know the Friars over the past 6 years has been life changing for me. They are such a kind, caring and compassionate order. It was such a pleasure getting to know them personally. Father Ed was such a wonderful friend and greatly missed. Father Richard has helped in more ways than he will ever know and a good friend. Such fun was had playing cards with these 2! Father Richard's homilies were so inspirational. You have a great talent and speak to the people. Father Matthew and Father Steve also give inspirational homilies! Truly wish I could have gotten to know them better. You will all be greatly missed! Of all the parishes I have joined St. Boni's is the best due to the parishioners but the Friars were the most inspirational. I wish each and everyone of the Friars many blessings, good health and many happy days! Hope to see all of you again!
May God Bless you!

Fr. Ed Extra Special
Since I have been here we have had lots of great Friars. Fr. Ed provided Last Rites for my mother (Elaine). He was the only one available when I needed someone. She was in dementia and when he came, she responded. It was very rewarding for me to see her light up, recognize him, and make sense when she spoke. He treated her very respectfully in response. It was very rewarding for me to have her last session of recognition and 'normal' when he was there with us. All the Friars have been great, but Fr. Ed is extra special for me.

Love and Prayers - Clarissa Rownd
Thank you, Father Richard
Father Richard has so deeply enriched our family. He brought such humble leadership to our parish and wholeheartedly embraced my family as it has grown. He was the priest that helped me find my voice in our church community on parish council, officiated the marriage between Connor and me, baptized our babies, was always there to pray with me when I would feel anxiety about any situation, and ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS had the biggest hug for Kieran. He was there for me this year with comforting words when my dad died unexpectedly. He truly lives out Jesus' message of love and has been so deeply missed at our parish. When my husband was deployed for military service, he and my son (Kieran) formed a special bond. At his retirement party at the parish, Father Richard was giving a speech and Kieran ran up onstage to give him a hug. Father did not turn him away, instead he opened his arms to him. This kind of love is why I continue to believe in my Catholic faith. God is love. God is humble. God is peace. Thank you, Father Richard for being such a strong leader and amazing example of this love. - Sarah, Connor, Kieran, Clara, and Taige Thornton |
Mass Rain or Shine
Dear Friars, The Saint Bonaventure Church is the best choice for us in Bloomington. We joined the Church since 1997. We never forget the first Mass at St Bonnie, it was just liked we were attending at our home in Vietnam. First we met Fr Bernie Z., Fr Bob, Fr Urban, Fr Tom ( so long time we didn't see Him), etc. One time, the weather was very bad storm in the morning before Mass time 8:45 am, I called the office, Fr Bernie answered the phone, then he said, "we do have Mass even shine or rain, 7 days a week." We were so happy He said that. We feel so sad Friars will no longer stay at St Bonaventure. We will miss Friars very much. God Love you all Friars.

Franciscan Legacy Will Last Forever
Frank and I moved to east Bloomington in August, 1960 with five children and a 6th one due in November. On the day after we moved into our house, Frank and I went to the Saint Bonaventure campus where we met Father Ambrose and Queenie and registered as parishioners. Father Ambrose was a wonderful Pastor! Our lives were so good and we were happy to start our new life in Bloomington. We had moved from a small town and it took some time to get to know the people, especially at church. To review the history of the church, I read the 50th Anniversary book and was amazed at all the activities that happened in those years to make the parish grow into what it is today. There was a spirit of responsibility given to us by our dear friars.
I will always remember the encouragement Frank received from Fathers Quintin, Howard, Edmund and Regis to apply for the diaconate. And once he was enrolled in the program, the priests and associates provided steady support for both of us. This was a life-changing experience for us. Frank was ordained in 1978 and was assigned to serve in his beloved parish, Saint Bonaventure.
Frank and I joined the parish as young parents of a growing family. We raised our children with the support of Saint Bonaventure, participated in and benefited from many ministries and activities. Since I moved to an assisted living facility in Bloomington, I have continued to participate in parish activities as I am able. I really appreciated the “Bus Ministry” that allowed me to attend Mass every weekend (before COVID-19). I enjoyed the garage sale last month. And I hope to attend more luncheons and festivals. Saint Bonaventure has been an important part of my life since 1961 (70 years).
Our church was started as the changes enacted by the Second Vatican Council took place. Our Franciscan priests embraced the changes immediately and encouraged active participation by parishioners. They have always demonstrated respect for women and strongly encouraged women to participate in the work and leadership of the church. They encouraged girls to become altar servers. They have shared the leadership of the church with parishioners. They have led with kindness at all times. Under the guidance of the Franciscans, St. Bonaventure has been a well-functioning parish. People work together really well in our church. They care for each other and do things together. What I have learned is that you get out of your parish as much as you put into it.
I will miss the physical presence of Franciscan priests and brothers at Saint Bonaventure but I think that their legacy will last forever.
I also want to remember also the Franciscans who so faithfully led prayers and inspired us at spiritual retreats, beginning at the original retreat house in Chaska, and later at the retreat house in Prior Lake. Many Franciscan Fathers and Brothers served there for many years.
In 2020, we were informed that Franciscans could no longer be our spiritual leaders because of age and availability. That was a shock to everyone and unbelievable. But slowly we understood and accepted this new reality. They have been wonderful leaders and gave this parish a good start. Now it is up to us to continue. And we will, with God’s help.

Friars Have Been Instrumental in Our Lives
I served mass for Fr. Ambrose, the first pastor of St. B. back when we were still doing the prayers at the foot of the altar. Through all the years my family has had numerous baptisms, first communions, confirmations, weddings and funerals at St. B. From Fr. Ambrose, Fr. Simeon, Fr. Howard, Fr. Ed to Fr. Richard and all those in between the Friars have been instrumental in all of our lives. Thank you so much for passing on Christ's message and passion to all of us. We will miss you!

Franciscan Spirit Is a Light in Darkness
Dear Friars, thank you so much for the Franciscan spirit of loving God through loving others fully and all He has made including nature. Your living in poverty and deep prayer to give more to others is a light in the darkness. Our family/boys were drawn to Saint Bonaventure by the way Father Richard spoke truth as well as love to their hearts and we continue to hope the spirit of the Franciscans carries on through the years to come.

A Farewell to the Friars - One memory from Bill Knight
A couple of years ago this life-long altar boy did something he was told not to do when he was a kid growing up ... he went shopping for a “new” church. After visiting many south metro churches, I kept coming back to Saint Bonaventure. Here, I found a group of people I wanted in my life — in my faith journey. And when I volunteered to be a lector at Sunday Mass, I got to better know our pastor at that time, Fr. Richard Kaley. And I even learned that some long-time parishioners still call him by his nick-name, “Butch.”
While this story could travel down any one of many roads, I want to take you on just one and leave you with this memory.
One Sunday morning Fr. Richard began his homily by telling the congregation a story about himself - how he sorts the church mail each morning during the week. One day in his office he came across an envelope that was creased and gently torn in a couple of places. On the front of it a postal employee had stamped a message reading, “Damaged in transit, but deliverable.” Fr. Richard saw this message as the main part of an upcoming homily and something for us to embrace.
A Sunday or so later, he began his homily by putting all of us in the congregation on the face of that envelope, saying even though there may be times when we feel really overwhelmed and we become one of those people “damaged in transit,” Fr. Richard said we all remain children of God and we are all "deliverable” to Him.
So now when I sort through my mail at home, I pay a little more attention to everything on the front of the envelopes. Thanks, Fr. Richard.

Thank You to the Friars
Today is the last day of our co-op year and we, the families of Corpus Christi Homeschool Group want to express our thanks to the Franciscan Friars.
Today is different, because not only are we saying Thank You to the Friars – but we are saying Good Bye. The Franciscan Friars have been at St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Community since its inception in 1958. They created this beautiful parish – and this summer they are leaving.
The parish that you, the Franciscans, have created provides us with a perfect home for our homeschool group with the welcoming church, well-designed classrooms, gym with stage, and beautiful grounds. Most importantly, we appreciate how we are included in the Mass and how your special homilies have fortified our families’ faith.
We, the families of Corpus Christi Homeschool Group, say THANK YOU!
